About Us

The Quilt Trail in Northeast Tennessee traces its origins to the early 2000s in Southern Ohio. Inspired by Donna Sue Groves who worked in community arts, the idea was to rejuvenate her mother's gray tobacco barn with a quilt pattern. What began as a single project soon flourished into a regional tourism endeavor, spanning over 40 states and even extending into Canada. Our section of the Quilt Trail is managed by the Appalachian RC&D Council based in Johnson City and includes over 130 quilt sites across six counties.

Visitors can explore the trail by county, experiencing the rich stories and artistic expressions on display. From Carter to Washington County, each site presents a unique quilt design, reflecting the local history and culture. Our council facilitates learning opportunities about the significance of arts and agricultural heritage, connecting people to the narratives behind these quilt sites and promoting local businesses.

In 2017, we introduced the Quilt Stories Project, a collaboration with the Tennessee Arts Commission and ETSU's Anthropology Department, to document and preserve quilt stories through audio and slideshow formats. This initiative brings to life the personal tales and traditions behind the quilts, narrated by local volunteers and showcased in a collection of online videos.

The Quilt Trail is not only about appreciating art but also about embracing our heritage. Though we are not currently adding new barns to our database, we encourage individuals to create quilt blocks as a personal homage to their roots and the beauty surrounding them. Our DIY guide provides details on materials and techniques, fostering a deeper connection with history through creativity.

The tradition of quilting serves as a testament to the resilience and artistry of our ancestors, each quilt hosting a story within its patterns. The Quilt Trail brings these histories to light, celebrated against the backdrop of Appalachian barns and landscapes, offering a visual journey through time.
