About Us

Clos Saron vineyard's journey commenced with a half-acre of Cabernet Sauvignon vines planted in a less than ideal location. In 1995, our friend Leonard offered my wife, Saron, and me the chance to take over his small vineyard. We realized that the lean nature of his homemade Cabernet-Merlot blend was due to the cooler microclimate rather than his winemaking methods in a quaint stone cellar. We decided to graft the vines to Pinot Noir, a variety well-suited to such conditions. Thus, 400 Pinot Noir vines took root alongside new plantings, forming what we call the 'Old Block.' Three years later, when Leonard sold us this land, Clos Saron was born.

Located in Oregon House, California, within the Sierra Nevada Foothills, our 'Home Vineyard' offers a unique microclimate and soil composition remarkably suited for Pinot Noir. It spans 2.5 acres with 4,500 own-rooted Pinot Noir vines planted on a north-east facing slope at 1500-1600ft altitude, on clay-loam and fractured volcanic rock, rich in natural life. These conditions have allowed us to produce Pinot Noir with distinctive character.

Recently, we discovered that our region is part of the 'Smartville Complex,' distinct from typical granitic soils of most foothills. Dating back 160 million years and sub-oceanic in origin, this soil underpins the unique traits, potential for aging, and balance of our wines.

Besides Pinot Noir, we craft various wines focusing on expressing their 'Terroir.' Our philosophy is chemical-free farming and simple winemaking, keeping the wines true to their origin.
