About Us
The 480 acre Klinefelter Farm was given to Highland Community College by John M. Klinefelter for the purpose of agricultural education. With its beautiful streams, ponds, hedgerows, hay meadows, and timbered areas, visitors can experience an historic farm that was in the Klinefelter family for over 130 years. The historic “Swiss dairy barn” has been completely renovated into a conference center which hosts a multitude of events which promote education and agriculture. A trail system of over five miles meanders through the timber and along the streams of the farm and offers hikers, runners, and mountain bikers a close-up look at a variety of flora and fauna. Visitors can also see our small vineyard, orchard, perennial vegetable and berry gardens, beehives, wildlife habitat projects, and native American heirloom seed garden. Research plots are maintained by Kansas State University Research and Extension and The Land Institute. The farm serves not only HCC students but also the surrounding community. Visitors are always welcome any day of the week, and guided farm tours are by appointment by contacting Wendell Ganstrom, Klinefelter Farm, projects manager. The farm is easy to find by taking the Mulberry Rd. exit off US 36 highway two miles east of Hiawatha. Then turn right on 230th St. and go 2/3 mile east to the farmstead entrance. A sign at the Mulberry Rd. and 230th St. corner points the way. Visit our Facebook page to see pictures of all the activities at the farm at http://www.facebook.com/klinefelterfarm.
