About Us

Mission Garden is a vibrant living museum showcasing the agricultural heritage of the Sonoran Desert. We are dedicated to preserving the traditional techniques and crops that have thrived in this harsh environment for millennia. Our garden features a diverse collection of heritage fruit trees, heirloom crops, and edible native plants, all meticulously cultivated to adapt to the local climate.

Managed by the non-profit organization Friends of Tucson's Birthplace, Mission Garden is located at the foot of Sentinel Peak, which is a historically significant location. This site, once the Native American village of Cuk Ṣon, remains sacred to the Tohono O'odham community. The garden plots are thoughtfully designed to represent various historical and cultural periods, including Native Plants, Early Agriculture, Hohokam, and O'odham gardens, among others. Each area provides a unique glimpse into the agricultural practices of the different ethnic groups who have farmed the Tucson Basin over the last four millennia.

Our mission extends beyond merely showcasing plants; we offer educational opportunities through tours, workshops, and events. Visitors can explore the gardens on their own or join guided tours to deepen their understanding of the region's rich agricultural history. Our events range from educational workshops to cultural celebrations, fostering a deeper connection with the land and its people.

At the garden, we emphasize hands-on learning and community involvement. Programs like 'Travel to Oaxaca' and workshops focusing on 'Pro-Neighborhoods' provide immersive experiences that engage people of all ages in the traditions of sustainable agriculture. Volunteers play a crucial role in maintaining our garden, and we welcome those interested in supporting our mission through stewardship and donations.

Whether you're a history enthusiast, a gardening aficionado, or simply looking to enjoy the natural beauty of the desert, Mission Garden offers something for everyone. Join us in celebrating Tucson's unique agricultural legacy and help us preserve it for future generations.
