About Us

The Bee Lab serves as a hub for research and education focused on the health and conservation of bee populations. Our team is dedicated to advancing the understanding of bee ecology and the impact of environmental changes on these vital pollinators. Our research initiatives aim to empower beekeepers and promote healthy bee communities through innovative strategies.

We are home to several renowned experts in the field, including Dr. Marla Spivak, whose pioneering work in bee health has garnered international acclaim. Alongside, Dr. Dan Cariveau explores the habitat needs and ecological significance of native bees. Dr. Declan Schroeder's research delves into honey bee virology, emphasizing the role of Deformed Wing Virus and its effects on colony health.

Educational outreach forms a core component of our mission, with programs designed to educate the community, support beekeepers, and enable citizen science initiatives. These programs play an essential role in conservation efforts and involve collaborations with local farmers and land managers to develop pollinator-friendly practices.

The Bee Lab also operates a comprehensive mentoring apiary program, supporting both budding and experienced beekeepers with hands-on guidelines and expert advice. Together, we strive to cultivate a sustainable environment for both bees and humans to thrive.

Our facility, part of the University of Minnesota's Department of Entomology, also provides a rich learning environment where students and researchers converge to share knowledge, inspire action, and champion the welfare of bees.
