About Us
The Gibson House and Property is a vital resource for discovering and engaging with the rich tapestry of regional arts and culture in our county. We warmly invite the community to delve into the diverse exhibitions, programs, and welcoming community spaces available at this historic landmark.
Originally the residence of William and Mary Gibson until 1963, the house sat neglected after their descendants' departure. Acquired by Yolo County in 1975, the property was transformed into a county park and restored to showcase the lives of pioneering farm families in Yolo County. In 1976, it received a spot on the National Register of Historic Places, overseen by the non-profit Yolo County Historical Museum until 2018.
The historic mansion began its journey in 1857, when William Byas Gibson purchased 160 acres of land and a modest wooden farmhouse. As his farming and ranching endeavors flourished, so did his homestead, evolving to reflect the architectural styles of the 19th century. Today, our building stands as a tribute to these evolving styles and holds a place on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Barn Gallery is a testament to our commitment to fostering vibrant cultural and artistic programs. It showcases a diverse array of emerging and established artists with quarterly exhibitions, offering a dynamic cultural experience for all visitors.
Since 1978, dedicated Gibson gardeners have nurtured the property's gardens, including flourishing herb and kitchen gardens, with plants propagated for sale. Additionally, the historic Valley Oak, an 83-inch diameter California native tree estimated to be 300 years old, stands proudly on the grounds alongside the olive orchard remnants, which were once a productive part of the estate.
